The BROTES (“SPROUTS”) series is the brainchild of Enio’s fascination with the primitive line, inspired by the Chamacocos Indigenous people of Paraguay and by the studies of renowned psychologist Rhoda Kellogg, who investigated children’s scribbles. To merge these two influences into a single body of work, Enio developed proprietary techniques for tracing lines in a more primal and childlike manner. The result was a collection of more than 350 colorful creatures and objects that appeal to both adults and children alike. While the BROTES series initially presents itself as playful and childlike, it quietly engages with deeper political and societal undercurrents. In 2016, the project culminated in a month-long solo exhibition at the Costa Rica National Gallery, which subsequently acquired 15 works for its permanent collection.
